Memorial Day is often celebrated with barbecues and beach days here in Southern California but the significance of the day does inspire us to pause and remember those who paid and many who are continuing to pay a steep price for the freedoms we enjoy on our holiday. * If you are a past or active duty member of the military, tour the Queen Mary for free and immerse yourself in the the rich history of the Grey Ghost. Originally a luxury liner, the Queen Mary was transformed into a battleship during World War II, and is a fitting outing for a Memorial Day remembrance.
* The Richard Nixon Library and Museum will hold their Memorial Day Commemoration Event on Monday, May 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. The event features remarks by Retired Army Colonel Robert M. Kirila, former Deputy Commander of the 7th Special Forces Group, a Presentation of the Colors, a performance by the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band, and a formal wreath laying ceremony.
* The Canoga Park Memorial Day Parade is a tribute to the country's young military men and women. In addition to marching military units, the parade also features antique cars, floats, flyovers by military aircraft, and equestrian units and in true Memorial Day style, the parade is followed by a party, complete with food and live music.
