Did You Know? There are over 150 species of rose, but thousands of specially cultivated varieties. Still, with all that creativity, a true blue rose can never exist ' its DNA structure actually lacks the gene needed to produce delphinidin, which is the source of blue coloring. For the same reason, black roses are not truly black ' they are dark red.

In the Middle Ages, roses were once thought to be only for the very rich and royal. Their perfume was desired and rose attar (oil) was often used by the socially elite to scent their baths. But just how priceless was this attar? It is estimated that it takes 180 pounds of roses ' approximately 60,000 flowers ' to produce just one fluid ounce of rose oil. No wonder it was so exclusive!
