The History of the Rose
Cultivation of roses for gardens started 5,000 years ago, and it was believed to have begun in China. Throughout the Roman history, most cultivation of roses occurred in the Middle East. In early history they were valued for their medicinal purposes, fragrance and the petals were used as confetti during parties. When the Roman Empire fell, the rose began to spread throughout the world.
In the 15th century, roses were used to symbolize warring factions in England, with the white rose symbolizing the house of York and the red rose symbolizing the house of Lancaster in what would become known as the War of the Roses. In the 17th century, they were in such high demand that roses were used as legal tender. However, roses didn?t become a staple in European culture until the 18th century. Soon, hybridizers started breeding native roses to create the beautiful blooms used in cut flowers today.

Feeling grateful this November? Us too. With Thanksgiving on the horizon, it's definitely the time to start taking stock and counting our blessings. It is easy to see why. There are roughly 100 separate hydrangea species within the genus hydrangea. It is native to areas in eastern and southern Asia, including Japan, China, Indonesia, and places within the Himalayas. It is also indigenous to areas in North and South America.
Interesting Hydrangea Facts
<a href="https://www.frenchflorist.com/flowers/hydrangea/">Hydrangeas</a> have a very long blooming season that starts in early spring and continues to the end of fall. No wonder they are becoming popular as wedding flowers. The huge flowers are made up of smaller clusters that emerge from the tips of previous years new stem growth. That's why hydrangeas shouldn't be pruned unless you know what you're doing. Many species won't bloom if the new growth that emerges from old woody stems, is cut off or if a late freeze damages the new stem growth.
Most hydrangeas are white or cream-colored. Pink and blue hydrangea flower clusters don't get their color from some chemical dye. The color or lack thereof has everything to do with the soil pH level. The acidic soil produces aluminum which the soil releases into the roots of the hydrangea, causing aluminum to react with other compounds in the plant, and that causes the flower heads to turn blue.
When hydrangeas grow in soil with a very high alkaline pH, the flowers gradually turn pink. That means that soil with a neutral pH naturally produces pale cream-colored flowers.

Tulips look great in tight groups, and your pot should be at least 18 inches wide and 15 inches deep. This is especially important if you want to layer your tulips. Your pot should also allow for good drainage, as too much water will affect growth.

Use good quality peat-free compost. If planting a single layer of tulips, fill the pot with compost to around five inches from the top. Plant the bulbs around an inch apart, pointed side facing up, then cover with two to three inches of compost.
