butterfly gardensFlowers are always beautiful, when given as a gift or gracing our homes. But they are also play a critical role in our ecosystem, and are far more than just a 'pretty face'. From inviting butterflies, to supporting the cause of the honeybees, to repelling pesky insects ' these incredible plants provide many other benefits. This summer, let French Florist assist you in creating butterfly and bee gardens that will enhance your environment in many ways.

But Won't They Sting Me? According to experts, the honeybee population has dramatically decreased in the last 20 years. Because they are so important in maintaining a sufficient and healthy food supply, anything that we can each do to help them to thrive is a great idea. And don't worry, honeybees pose little threat of stinging when they are collecting nectar; they are generally only aggressive when protecting the hive, or cornered. Bees and butterflies are attracted to many of the same plants, and you can create a single garden with plenty of flowers to attract them both! Although some people create gardens which are complex, you can also design a very simple oasis. You'll need bright, nectar filled flowers, such as sunflowers, asters and goldenrod. For even more success, plant clover, butterfly bushes, geraniums, milkweed, zinnias and hyacinth. Bee also love snapdragons, which can add a lot of interest and color to a garden.

Some of our favorite flowers can also be utilized as natural plant repellents, and placing them around a backyard deck may help you to have a bug-free evening. Chrysanthemums are a powerhouse when it comes to warding off pests, including roaches, ants, Japanese beetles, ticks, silverfish, lice, fleas, bedbugs, and spider mites! Marigolds will keep aphids and mosquitoes at bay, and the delicately beautiful allium flower will defend against pests that attack vegetable gardens. Sometimes called 'nature's pesticide', petunias also keep watch over vegetable gardens ' you can plant them, or keep them in hanging pots surrounding the area.

When imagining an outdoor space for summer entertaining, don't forget the flowers! Not only are they lovely, but they can make your own little world a better place. Trust the floral experts at French Florist to help you choose just the right varieties for bee and butterfly gardens everyone will love.
